我談談自己對本科生活以及研究生這兩年學習生活的理解。
(1)本科階段：本科四年里沒有了高中三年的那種壓力，但是現在回想那時的自己就像一只井底之蛙，只知道學好專業課，與外界的交流很少。
現在一些實力很強大學的學生在大二就開始跟著老師搞科研，接受科研訓練，同時學校提供很多創新項目支持他們，我現在真的好羨慕他們。
我那是學校沒有平臺，也沒有老師的引導，我對科研知之甚少。
但考研一年的時間，我還是學到了很多，學會了堅持，學會了自我調節，讓自己變得更堅強，更獨立與自信。
(2)碩士研究生階段：碩士兩年里雖然取得的成果比較少，但是前兩年的時間里是一個積累的階段，也是開始認識科研的階段。

知識儲備：
由于自己的專業所限，讀研期間主要的研究方向是課程與教學論，尤其是關于國外教師方面的工作做得比較多，因此可以說在課程與教學論方面的專業知識積累的比較豐富之余，哲學領域涉足的不完全。但是哲學卻一直是我的興趣所在，也是我專業之余學習和閱讀的主要的書目。西方的蘇格拉底到“后現代”，中國的孔子到“現代儒學”，一直都是我感興趣的閱讀領域。另外，文化學、人類學，甚至宗教學等都是我經常涉獵和翻閱的圖書。或者可以用“由博返約”來形容我的知識學習觀，個人認為如果沒有廣博的知識積淀，就無法對教育問題作出深入的分析和探討。
研究工作：
讀研期間曾經協助導師申請了重慶市重點課題《基于教師專業發展的教師督導策略研究》的申報工作，這一課題現在已經審批成功并在著手研究中。參譯了導師主持的《教師督導和評價——理論和實踐的結合》一書十、十一章的翻譯工作。另外自己在《外國教育研究》等學術期刊上發表正規學術論文七八篇之余。
學習計劃：
一直以來對于中國古代文化有著深厚的感情，在閱讀現代教育類的著作和論文時也總是覺得都是外國的東西多，從中國古代文化中挖掘的內容不夠。因此，一直以來有一個設想，能夠從中國古代自身的思想出發構建一些真正屬于我們自己的教育學思想。雖然這還只是一個初步的設想，但是讀博期間我會朝著這個方向去作出自己的努力。關于具體的學習計劃，其實一直深感自己所讀的書還甚少，大量的著作都還需要自己的品閱，因此讀書仍是讀博期間的一大要務。
就業目標：

美國生物統計學博士就業前景如何?申請美國碩士博士留學，最終的目的是歸國后能很好的就業，下面就來分析下美國生物統計學博士就業前景。

今年八月，我將前往美國西雅圖的華盛頓大學（University of Washington），在杰克遜國際關系學院（The Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies）攻讀博士學位，方向為中國政治。
關于選校
就博士申請而言，我的選校的不靠譜程度，等于“盲人騎瞎馬，夜半臨深池”。方可成總結自己的博士申請選校，是按照趙鼎新的建議，“廣種薄收”。而他也很感謝趙鼎新的建議，因為結果完全驗證了這一點。就我所知，申請十個以上的項目都很常見，算得上“廣種”的基準線；也有申請二十多個的。其中有碰運氣的因素，因為你也不知道招生委員會到底看中什么，何況不同學校的招生委員會口味也不同，沒有一定準則。
選校是很考驗申請者知識儲備和眼光的一件事，選校和定位的靠譜程度對申請結果有著決定性的影響。靠譜的選校，要求申請者對自己、和對自己所要研究的學科和主題有著一定的了解：了解學術史的譜系，了解當下的研究前沿，了解自己的研究興趣。歸結到操作化的一點上，就是要知道在你要去的國家，目前有哪些與你興趣和風格相關的學校和教授，開設可供申請的項目，從中選擇十到二十個。在這一點上做的比較好的，要么是國內較好的高校科班出身，長期追蹤某一學科的研究動態，訓練扎實；或者要么是美本或美碩，占有天然信息優勢。對一些非正式渠道傳播的消息八卦，例如教授們的人事變遷，他們也有著了解。這些“圈內”信息的重要性，有時甚至遠遠高于通過正式渠道獲得的信息。
反觀我自己，基本上可以說處在一個信息盲區。一方面，我是半路出家，改換門庭，基礎訓練不扎實，也很難找到前輩指導，畢竟不同學科的申請差異較大。()另一方面，我沒有海外訓練的背景，甚至沒有交流經歷，對美國學界新近的研究成果、在我的興趣上可供申請的項目、不同院校的課程設置和方法論傾向、近些年招收中國學生的狀況、以及獎學金情況，一概不知。一直到申請結束后等待結果的一兩個月里，我才騰出空來在寄托家園人文社科版、Gradcafe上翻閱了大量這樣的信息。我才知道我申請的一個項目中我感興趣的教授即將跳槽到另一個學校，而另一個項目最近好幾年沒招過中國學生。而在申請之前，我確實沒有時間和精力梳理這些散落在討論帖中的`只言片語，而“圈內人”自然容易以相對較小的成本，在各種正式和非正式場合獲得這些信息。
總體來說，我的博士選校是很危險和不靠譜的：光打醬油的就占了一半多，而top program是既需要實力也需要運氣的。我的準備還遠遠不夠。選校失誤的主要原因在于如前所敘的信息的局限。我的笨拙的選校方法是，在圍繞感興趣的問題所讀的英文文獻的索引中尋找可能的教授和項目。由于對裴宜理的研究感興趣，我主要讀了她的論文和著作，可惜這個方法太低效，沒有找到太多合適的項目。我當時甚至不知道按照US-news的專排來選校。后來想要多申一些項目時，時間上已經來不及，因為博士項目一般截止較碩士項目為早。
雖然沒有“廣種”，最后還能“薄收”，一方面要感謝運氣，另一方面也說明我還是有一些優勢。最主要的一點大概是我對自己的認知和定位很清晰。在SOP里，我把自己想要做什么，為什么要做，過去曾為此做過什么準備，都串聯起來，展現給招生委員會。因為學術訓練不足，我主要強調了自己的實踐經歷和工作經驗。對現實的觀察和思考引導我走向博士項目，我需要通過規范化的訓練，學習分析它們的方法，解決切身觀察、體驗到的問題。一個替我改SOP的哈佛女生的評價是：it is very logical。楊老師說讀我的SOP給人的感覺是，好像我一開始就想得很清楚，規劃的很好，一步一步這么走過來。事實上我完全是磕磕碰碰摸索，只是后來通過思考和表達把它呈現的很清晰。
對于后來的申請者，我在這方面所能分享的失誤教訓大于成功經驗。占有信息非常重要。申請者最好早日留意和積累相關信息，多看國外學術期刊，了解研究動態。這不是一朝一夕之功，臨時抱佛腳是不成的。本專業的要利用本來的優勢，尤其是咨詢已經出國的師兄師姐。當然，盡信書不如無書，畢竟申請這事，從結果推論過程，未必可靠。可能就跟盲人摸象似的，有人摸到象鼻子，就說重要的是象鼻子，有人摸到象腿，就堅持重要的是象腿。路是自己走的，要有自己的判斷。轉專業的沒這個優勢，多方面努力吧。另外一個可行的辦法是根據US-news的專排，把自己專業前50的院校和項目梳一遍。這都需要時間和精力，因此選校方面最好是盡早準備和積累。
軟硬件：SOP/推薦信/GPA/GT
常常有人問這些指標中哪一項最重要，我自己也為這個問題困擾過。現在，基于我“摸象”的經驗和結果，我的結論是SOP是最重要的，因為在GPA、GT和推薦信都不算非常strong、轉專業、沒有publication的情況下，可能是SOP給了我一線生機。相比GPA和GT這些干巴的數據，SOP是比較“軟”而信息豐富的：它集中展現了我的經歷，個人體驗，和研究興趣，給了申請者補救短板、展現個性和潛力的機會。
我的本科GPA和碩士GPA都不高，因為在讀書階段，我從來沒有認真考慮過從事研究工作，也因此沒有好好利用在校時的學術資源。GT分數尚可，但GRE的AW部分才3分，托福的口語部分22分，因此限制了申請一些卡單項的學校。比如波士頓大學對口語要求好像是26；盡管傅士卓的方向和我比較符合，但也沒有申，現在想來有點后悔。因為有些學校可能不一定因為單項刷人，會有條件錄取，讓申請者補考托福。
我只能說，in my case, GPA和GT相對沒有那么重要。當然，不管怎么說，高分總比低分好。但是，到了申請的階段，GPA已經難以改變，GT雖然可以刷分，但是需要付出時間、精力和人民幣，其收益卻難以保證。譬如，我一共考了兩次托福，主要想刷口語分，但兩次分數都一樣。而那時我還沒有開始寫SOP和Writing Sample。于是第二次分數出來后我就退考了第三次托福，因為好好準備文書會比單項提高個幾分帶來更高的邊際收益。
至于推薦信，申請結束后我在論壇上看到有人討論說，top program“基本是靠信進去的”。我無從判斷這句話的可靠程度。只能說，能夠找到美國學術圈圈內人寫推薦信，效果大概要好些。至少在推薦信造假普遍的背景下，美國教授推薦的信用程度總是高一些。我的推薦信是原專業的導師、在報社工作時的兩位領導潘總和何總寫的。雖然很可惜未能得到未來專業學術領域的評價，但是這三封信無疑對我過去的學習和工作情況何以能勝任未來的研究，作了中肯和有力的推薦。尤其是潘總和何總對我在新聞領域工作的肯定，我相信對我進入一個強調解決real-world problems的項目起過重要作用。在此向我的三位推薦人，特別是潘總和何總表示感謝。
套磁和其他
由于各種原因，我沒有進行任何套磁。此前看到差不多的說法，都是博士套磁有用，碩士沒有必要。我無從判斷，但根據申請結果，碩士確實要比博士申請容易許多。畢竟碩士基本上是自費的，而博士是拿錢的。
在博士的獎學金結果沒有出來前，我曾猶豫過是否再讀一個碩士項目作為跳板。坦白地說，在留學黨越來越多的情況下，與美本或美碩競爭，我沒有優勢，也像方可成的文章中那般躊躇：獲得浸潤在社會的實際運行中的經驗，卻沒有學術性地研究它的訓練積累。xxx在一篇訪談里說“中國來的學者當然知道中國社會，但是缺乏分析這個社會的方法”，大概也是這個意思。但是世間哪得雙全法，對我來說，再花兩年的時間和幾十萬去走一個跳板，實在不是一個容易做的決定。所幸后來收到了award letter, 也就不猶豫了。
對于還有時間成本，對未來道路還在搖擺中的申請者來說，申請國外碩士項目應該是很好的跳板，進可攻，退可守，難度也較低，好像也可以申請留學基金委的資助。如果不想負擔經濟開支，想本科直接申請博士，可能要付出更多努力優化各項指標才行。
我理解的出國申請是一項充滿變數的系統工程。它有一些大致的方向路徑，但并沒有哪一項指標是板上釘釘的決定性因素，可能一個不曾留意的小小擾動，也會影響全局。即使走過這段歷程的過來人，也無法拍著胸脯保證一條康莊大道，或是必勝秘籍。對于那些手持一條象腿就好像洞察了全局的人或說法，最好保持懷疑，因為“沒有一個受人尊敬的結論不事先闡述自己的局限的”。
我理解的博士生活和學術研究也是如此--明了自己的努力和貢獻永遠都是有局限的。正如下面這幅圖闡釋的那樣，數年殫精竭慮或許只能為人類的知識貢獻一個小小的突起--這還是最好的結果之一。
盡管如此，它仍然值得我投身其中，滿懷趣味、熱情和期待。我曾坐在一輛擠得像罐頭一樣”校車”中，它是一輛核載十多人的舊面包車，卻塞進了二十多個農民工子弟小學的學生。去社區家訪發現這些家庭因為男孩偏好而普遍超生，盡管支持已有的孩子上學已不容易；這個小學還曾因城市規劃被數次強拆。他們是弱勢群體和利益受損者，卻也是政策的違抗者：宏觀的結構和微觀的行動者在這里形成一個復雜的紐結。我試圖以人類學家的方式接觸和觀察形形色色的官員：有渾水摸魚的跑路黨，有精明實干者，也有酒色之徒。有“不喝酒人生有什么意義”的，也有為了工作和前途喝到賠上身體的。在某個地方區政府門口我見過一群上訪鄉民，領導的車開過來，一個干瘦的老太太搬著椅子堵在正中間不讓走。兩個二十出頭的武警小伙一邊一個把老太太連人帶椅端起來，抬轎子似的抬到邊上去了。那一刻在場的所有人都笑了起來--包括小伙子和老太太，也包括我--好像他們的關系是再平常不過的祖孫似的。它顛覆了我對抗爭和集體行動的刻板認知。一種文化、一個社會是如此復雜而多維，任何一種詮釋、理論和意識形態都不能將其壟斷。正是由于有著知識之間的縫隙和斷裂點，而填補這些縫隙又能幫助理解和改善我們的生活，智識的探尋和開拓才會不僅有趣，還有意義。如果我的探索能為曾見過、交談過也試圖理解過的那些酒局官場、利益博弈中的人，在困擾他們的某些人類知識尚未到達的昏暗之處，投上一束理性的光，也就足夠甚至是奢望了。

I have acquired some basic knowledge of distributed hydrological erosion model during my graduate years and published a research paper in journal of natural resources.
